Taverna Mythos in Kalyves

Taverna Mythos in Kalyves As with everywhere we’ve lived in the world, we love to find a local restaurant that serves delicious food, at a great price, and with a comfortable, casual atmosphere.  In Kalyves, we have found a wide variety of places to enjoy, and most have the added benefit of a gorgeous setting by the sea. Taverna Mythos ticks all of these boxes AND they are open in the off season.  We stumbled across this place in late January, when the temperatures were cool and the weather was wet.  The taverna is located on the main road through the...

Giorgos Apartments, Paleochora

Giorgos Apartments, Paleochora After a few cloudy, damp days in the mountains of Meskla, we decided that it was time to explore the island a bit further and chase the sun! One of the first places that sprang to mind was Paleochora, which is a laid back village on the southwest coast of Crete. In reality, the drive to Paleochora is only about 1 hour and 40 minutes from where we are, but because rooms are so reasonably priced in the off-season, we decided to stay over. We were looking for a few things when deciding where to book. Our...

Wedding Weekend – Chittenden, Vermont

We recently spent a gorgeous weekend in Chittenden, Vermont at the beautiful Mountain Top Inn and Resort.  We were there to celebrate the wedding of Joanie’s daughter – the most special person in our lives! For those of you that may be unfamiliar with Chittenden, it is a small town between Rutland and Killington, Vermont and a 4.5 hour drive from our coastal Rhode Island location.  It is in the heart of ski country, surrounded by mountains.  Although long, the drive is scenic and relaxing enough, especially if the weather is good. The Mountain Top Inn and Resort occupies a gorgeous setting in the...

An afternoon in Newport, Rhode Island

An afternoon in Newport, Rhode Island Having spent many years in Rhode Island, Newport was a favored destination all year round.  From bar hopping, to shopping, to great restaurants, there is something for everyone to enjoy.  My favorite time of year, though, has always been off season.  The beauty of Newport RI in the off season, much like here on Crete, is the ability to actually enjoy local places without the summer crowds.  Parking is easy (relatively speaking) and often there is no wait at the local attractions and restaurants. On a recent trip back to the East Coast, we managed...

And so it begins…

And so it begins…a new chapter in life. Have you ever felt like you want to give it all up and have an adventure?  Bring some excitement back into your life? Amazingly enough, at least to us, we’ve decided to do just that!  We are selling it all – home, car, belongings – and moving to Greece.  Our decision came out of a casual conversation regarding places in the world that we loved and could actually see ourselves living in. We’ve traveled a bit — and Jens (who in a native of Germany) lived in Japan for 16 years....
