Municipal Market of Chania
The Chania market is one of the “must see” places while visiting Western Crete. In an indoor area of around 4,000 square meters vendors offer goods ranging from fresh meat, cheeses, herbs to kitschy souvenirs. You will also find some cafes with baked goods and a few places to grab a bite to eat.
The Chania market is located in the heart of the city and is a great spot to get out of the sun during the hot Cretan summer. It is close to the old town and Venetian harbor and serves as a good starting point for exploration of Chania.
The construction of the building that houses the market was completed in 1913, so there is a 100+ years of history in these halls. It was declared a protected monument by the Ministry of Culture in 1980!
Make sure to head to the market early in the morning for a more leisurely experience. Grab a little pastry and a frappe to go and set off for old town once you have taken in the vibe of this place.
