Elaia – a gift shop in Kolymbari, Crete

In one of our favourite little towns in Western Crete, Kolymbari, we have found this little gift shop which sells all kinds of souvenirs and some local consumables. Elaia (meaning olive) is located a mere 20 meters away from the seaside promenade with its variety of restaurants, cafes and tavernas.

Here you will find the usual “touristy” knick-knack like fridge magnets, postcards and jewelery, as well as figurines and ceramics – just to name a few products available in this jam-packed store. Other items sold are packaged herbs and spice mixes (for souvlaki, gyros, greek salads and more), as well as lotions and cremes made on Crete.

The best products sold there (in our opinion) are some of the local goods: Honey, olive oil from the Kolymbari area and raki (tsikoudia). The owner Stelios will invite you to a shot of raki, either traditional or honey infused, and lets you taste the wonderful honey as well. Stelios is an entertaining character with a good command of English and his family owns some olive groves used in the production of the oil he sells. He also owns a vineyard and makes his own raki and wine from the grapes his family harvests. The red wine is sold in repurposed plastic water bottles, no fancy labels there, but it tastes quite good!

Stelios also invited us to the raki distillery this year, but unfortunately we had to pass this year. We will try to make it to the olive harvest in January/February instead!

What to buy here:

  • Olive oil
  • Honey raki or regular tsikoudia
