Giorgos Apartments, Paleochora

After a few cloudy, damp days in the mountains of Meskla, we decided that it was time to explore the island a bit further and chase the sun! One of the first places that sprang to mind was Paleochora, which is a laid back village on the southwest coast of Crete. In reality, the drive to Paleochora is only about 1 hour and 40 minutes from where we are, but because rooms are so reasonably priced in the off-season, we decided to stay over.

We were looking for a few things when deciding where to book. Our accommodation had to be pet friendly, reasonably priced, and in a good location close to the sea. With Giorgos Apartments, we were successful in finding all three. The location of Giorgios Apartments was absolutely perfect for us. Right in town, within walking distance to beaches, restaurants and shopping.

When we arrived, there was no discernible reception area, so we phoned and discovered that our proprietor (George) was over on Gavdos island, but had left our key in the door. He kindly answered all of our questions and informed us that someone would stop by in the morning to take trash, bring clean towels and even pick up any supplies we might need.  George even called the next day to make sure we were happy with everything!

We were in a one bedroom apartment on the top floor, that had a beautiful outdoor terrace that overlooked the churchyard, and the fortezza was just steps away. The apartment was cute, with a small open kitchen, living and dining area that had sliding doors out onto the terrace.  The sunlit terrace, with its many flower filled planters, was exactly what we needed. We could see the sea in the distance from one side, and the village from the other.

The bedroom was a good size, with thick, warm blankets and a heating unit just in case the weather turned cold. The bathroom was small, but just fine for our needs. The apartment was clean and fully stocked with towels, bedding and all necessary kitchen ware and appliances. Free wi-fi was included.

Parking is mostly always a challenge in many areas on Crete, but we managed to find on street parking just a few blocks away. I imagine it would be a little harder to find something close by in the high season due to the influx of tourists.

We will most definitely be returning to Paleochora, and would be quite happy to stay at Giorgio’s Apartments again. If you want to stay at this place you can book it right here. Alternatively, here is a list of a few apartments and hotels in the Paleochora area. Happy travelling!
