Koutalis beach – Apokoronas, Chania area
Looking for some alone time for relaxing and a getaway at a beach that is not overcrowded? We have one for you!
Koutalis (referred to by the locals in our town as Koutalas) is a small, secluded beach just north of Kokkino Chorio. By car it is a 40 minute (roughly 30km) drive from Chania and a 1 hour drive from (50km) from Rethymno. Coming from Chania and passing through the lovely beach village of Kalyves you will be able to enjoy beautiful sea and mountain views as you pass through Almyrida, Plaka and Kokkino Chorio.
Follow the sign to Faros in Kokkino Chorio and soon you will encounter another sign pointing to Koutalas on your left hand side. Beware though, the sign to the beach does not look like an ordinary street sign so it is easy to miss.
How to get there
You can drive down all the way to the beach or park atop the hill above the beach and enjoy the views while taking the short hike down.
On many occasions you will not find a single soul on the beach, except for the occasional scuba divers who use this spot as a starting point for their explorations. It is not really suited for children because of the rather large pebbles and stones that cover the ground. Take some water shoes or a floating device to sit on (for getting into deeper waters) if you want to take a swim!
