Tarrha Glass Anogia

During our trip to Anogia, located in the Psiloritis mountain range on Crete, we stumbled upon this wonderful glass workshop. Marios and Natassa are the artists behind this operation and they are supported by their little rescued dog Iris. Both have studied three dimensional design on glass at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in England. Marios was also recognized as being one of the top 40 designers of the year at the New Designers Exhibition in 1994.

As you can see from the gallery below, many pieces are inspired by the Minoan age. The horn shapes pay a tribute to Knossos which is close to the birthplace of Marios and Natassa in Iraklion, Crete. Some items were especially made for art exhibitions and really show the skill of glassblowing and design of these artists.

So many nice pieces to choose from – we ended up purchasing a wonderful decanter. The molds for the bottle and stopper are made from rock of the surrounding Psiloritis mountains. Now that is a momento to take home when you have visited the region and are a fan of the mountains or appreciate good craftsmanship.

Make a short stop at Tarrha glass when you are in the area or are making your way up to the Nida Plateau and Ideon Cave. You won’t regret it! Even if you do not end up buying anything, it is a joy to talk with Marios and Natassa about their craft. If you are lucky and they are working on a piece you will be able to see the process right in their workshop.

For more information on Tarrha Glass you can check them out on Facebook, YouTube and their official website. If you are planning an overnight stay in Anogia (which we highly recommend), you can find some accommodations here.
